Overview
American foxhounds are recommended only for very active people who like
to exercise outdoors. These dogs are not happy lying around inside, though
they are very sociable with adults and children.
They get along with most other dogs but may chase unfamiliar cats.
Appearance
The coat is close, hard, and medium length. The foxhound is seen in all
colors, but the most common are tan and white, gold and white, and black
and white.
Grooming & Exercise Needs
A weekly brushing will keep the coat in good shape. This dog needs long
daily walks and frequent romps in a large, fenced-in area.
Origins
The American foxhound was derived from English stock in the 18th century.
Special Alerts
The American foxhound is not suitable for apartment life. If it is not called
upon to use its remarkable nose in vigorous activity, behavior problems,
such as howling, barking, or house-soiling, will result.
Breed-related health concerns: thrombocytopathy (a bleeding disorder
resulting from abnormal platelets).
